Quick Take
Laurent Ferrier has released a new in-house caliber, and it's an annual calendar! The Galet Annual Calendar Montre École houses the manually-wound LF126.01 and focuses on legibility, functionality, and wearability. The caliber itself also pays tribute to Ferrier's very first caliber, the tourbillon double hairspring, with a long "blade" type click. As you may know, an annual calendar has to be reset once a year on March 1 to account for the 28th of February (or 29th in a Leap Year). This example is no different, and it allows you to advance the date and month easily by turning the crown forward and backward. The day is advanced by the button on the left band of the case. You can also choose between a two-tone silvered dial and a dark slate-grey dial. The layout is easy to read, with the date displayed on the outer chapter ring, month and day in twin apertures under 12 o'clock, and a subsidiary seconds dial to add balance. The date numbers are painted in blue with a bright red hand for indication. The case itself is the familiar 40mm Galet case with a smooth rounded bezel and curved lugs. The watch is available in stainless steel, 18k red gold or 18k "pale" yellow gold, which is a new material or Laurent Ferrier
Why This Watch Matters
Laurent Ferrier is one of the most interesting watchmakers of our time. Each watch he creates seems to be better than the last, and the Galet Annual Calendar Montre École is no exception. As an independent manufacturer, it is not often that Ferrier launches a new caliber, so to have this new in-house annual calendar caliber join the ranks of the Tourbillon Double Hairspring and the Traveller complications is exciting. I would be remiss if I didn't point out that this watch clearly takes inspiration from vintage triple calendars from Vacheron Constantin and the like.

Initial Thoughts
I am ruined. I will never be satisfied with my watches again. This watch is my new grail. I have always admired and loved Laurent Ferrier watches, but have felt that they were a bit too precious for me. This annual calendar is a totally different ball game. For one, I love the annual calendar function. As someone who can barely afford a chronograph, the AC is the natural next step for me in a complication (unless QPs miraculously become less expensive) not to mention I have somewhat of an affinity for them after SIHH last year. Secondly, the easy to read dial with vintage inspired colors and layout are to die for. I just don't think you can get better than this. And finally, it's Laurent Ferrier! Need I say more? As I haven't seen this in the metal yet, I will stop right here, but rest assured I will be lining up outside the booth as soon as the show opens to get a glimpse.
