In this year's Hodinkee Holiday Gift Guides, our editors round up their top gift picks across a range of price points, from all corners of the internet and our very own Hodinkee Shop. No matter who you're shopping for this season, we've got you covered.
Whenever I'm gift shopping for someone, I usually don't get anything from their wishlist. That's so boring. Instead, I look for the gift that they didn't even know they needed and later learn to love. Sidenote: I only sometimes utilize this method when shopping for my wife because, well, wifey gets what wifey wants, but with others, I'm a little more brave. It usually results in a bewildered look on their face after opening my present to them, but eventually leads to appreciation in the long run, at least I'd like to think it does. Nonetheless, here's my holiday gift guide for your watch-obsessed loved ones.
I don't own an Omega Speedmaster. I want one, but I always tell myself, "it's always available. No need to rush to get this one." I've been telling myself this for the better part of five years now, and I'm still lusting for one. Come to find out, a lot of people I've met in my watch collecting journey think the exact same about this iconic watch. It's easy to fall into the trap of desiring the endless number of watch releases throughout the year, but it's important not to overlook the classics. Help your loved one out and get them a Speedy. They'll love it.
Frederic Malle Perfume
I hate perfume and cologne since they typically give me a headache. Not only that, but they all tend to have something about them that smells the same. The overall scent profiles vary, but there's still something or some ingredient that's common in all of them. I can't fully explain it, and I have yet to pinpoint exactly what that common ingredient is (I admit, I haven't tried too hard to find it), but nonetheless, I don't like it. Frederic Malle is a perfume brand that I discovered while walking out of a vintage watch shop here in Los Angeles. I reluctantly walked in with my wife, only to discover some of the best-smelling scents of my life. It feels really good to smell great while not smelling like everyone else. Plus, my wife likes it on me, and that's all that matters. It's a little pricey for perfume, but if you only wear perfume on special occasions, it'll last quite a while. I've had mine for over three years now.
Oval Leather Travel Case For Two Watches In Stained Dark Brown
If you're like me, you've spent most of your watch money allotment on watches and have little remaining for other important watch accessories. I bought a few budget travel cases online, but none do my beautiful pieces any justice. After a few years, I bit the bullet and splurged on one of these gorgeous leather cases and haven't regretted it in the least. There's just something about housing your most prized material possessions in something so nice. It's like they belong in this thing. Do your watch nerd loved ones a favor and hook them up with a travel case that's just as nice as their watches.
Girard-Perregaux LAUREATO Copper 38 MM
Presented in partnership with
Girard-Perregaux
The newest introduction from Girard-Perregaux is the Laureato 38mm Copper – a mid-sized, unisex model with a fascinating metallic-themed dial that will captivate onlookers.
Termed 'copper', the Maison, once again, showcases its expertise in mastering light with a dial that is complex and dynamic, evincing different shades depending on the available light source, from tawny brown to pink-toned gold. With over 230 years of history, Girard-Perregaux has amassed vast experience, skillfully utilizing light for the delectation of watch aficionados.
Housed in a slender case, just 10mm in height, the Laureato 38mm Copper is equipped with a self-winding movement, the Calibre GP03300. Visible via a see-through case-back, the in-house movement is enriched with a plethora of refined details, perpetuating the Maison's reputation for exquisite finishing. Some components feature no less than four different decorations ranging from bevelling, mirror-polishing, satin finish, snailing, sunray finish to various engravings. The bridges are decorated with straight Cotes de Geneve and the pink gold oscillating weight is embellished with circular Cotes de Geneve.
Although unequivocally new, the origin of this new model is clear to see. This latest creation remains a Laureato and upholds the timeless design language that is much loved by purists since the inaugural version was first launched in 1975.
Costco Membership
Do you have a loved one that always asks to go to Costco with you because they're unwilling to get a membership for themselves? I do, and I bet some of you do, too. Let's do everyone a favor and get these people memberships so they, too, can enjoy the wonderful world of bulk without tagging along with us all of the time. Let us shop in peace. All kidding aside, Costco is one of my favorite stores. I might even enjoy it more than watch shopping. Where else can you find high-quality goods in bulk at such a reasonable price point? You can also fuel up while shopping because of all of the delicious samples. Best place on Earth. Move over, Disneyland!
Apple Watch Series 8 GPS + Cellular 41mm Starlight Aluminum Case With Starlight Sport Band - S/M
Mechanical watches are cool and all, but let's face it, they're nowhere near as useful as an Apple Watch can be. Mechanical watches mainly just tell us the time, but an Apple Watch can play music, make calls, send and receive texts, provide directions, take notes, set reminders, read you a book, act as a calculator, act as your car key, measure your heart rate, measure blood oxygen levels, lets you take an ECG, track your exercise routines, track your sleep, automatically contact emergency services when needed, track your menstrual cycle, pay for things, and last but not least, tell the time. And these are only a few things the Apple Watch is capable of. I'm a mechanical watch lover, but damn I'm jealous of all these functions. Your loved one might be, too.
Uniqlo Washable House Slippers
I don't wear shoes in the house, and neither should you. The bottom of our shoes are disgusting. Think of all the places you've walked throughout the day, and now imagine all of that on your hardwood floors, tiles, and/or carpet. If you don't like walking around your house barefoot or in socks, then a cozy pair of house slippers should do the trick. This affordable pair from Uniqlo does wonders for me. They look nice, too.
