One of the things that sets this watch apart for Daniel is how well it flies under the radar – nobody is asking him about it or pointing it out, but he knows just how exceptional it is. Were they born with these bezels originally? Were these bezels added by Rolex at a later date? Are they fishier than that? To be honest, we're yet to hear a 100% compelling case from any angle, but our instinct is that they are in fact a real phenomenon (you just need to avoid the fakes out there, as always). It remains a staple of my collection to this day, and is easily the most important piece to me for a variety of reasons. It was this watch that really allowed me to fully understand the beauty of mechanical watches. The MK40 is not a \"moon watch\" in that it's not a hand-wound, date-less Speedmaster. But it is the perfect representation of the period of watchmaking in which I, and many of us, grew up. Today, it may have been dealt its first and most critical blow, when Nick Hayek Jr, the CEO of Swatch, the show's largest exhibitor – this includes 18 different brands such as Swatch, Omega, Breguet, and Longines, as well as several suppliers they own – announced it would not return for 2019.
\n
The news should not come as a total shock, the show had lost some 850 exhibitors over the last few years. Most, however, were small brands with little name recognition – one exception being Hermes, which jumped to the SIHH. Still, this comes as a surprise to many, myself included, as I did not expect Swatch to be the first to make the move. The rumor was that if any of the larger brands would jump first, it would be Breitling. In many ways, <a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/hodinkee-apple-watch-review/" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the very first review I wrote of the watch became one of my defining stories as a consumer journalist. I never thought it would be, but that story struck a nerve with what I like to call \"the real world.\" The real world is not the world we write about here on HODINKEE, when we can tout watches under $1,000 as \"bargains\" (<a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/best-new-watches-under-1000-dollar-2018/" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which we did earlier this week), but rather the one filled with people who think watches are completely superfluous, silly even. And they are, and I always have been the first to admit this publicly and privately. But I think what made that story so successful, and <a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/apple-watch-series-3-edition-review/" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">subsequently my follow-up review this past fall of the Series 3 successful, is that I took the same critical eye that I've used to build a career around hand-made luxury products to a consumer product – paying attention to physical details that traditional writers might overlook. Also, I took stock of the fact that the Apple Watch isn't really even a watch, and yet it 100% is a watch. And I noted how just how far ahead of Switzerland Apple was in terms of fit and finish per dollar.
","dropcap":true},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"copy":"
Since publishing of that first story almost four years ago, we've covered Apple products a dozen or so times. Really not that much in the grand scheme of things, considering we publish over 1,000 stories per year – but if you ask some Instagrammers and commenters, Apple is all we talk about. Oh, and they pay us, and everyone else too. Because why else would we be writing about what is clearly the most significant product to hit the wrist in decades, from arguably the most important consumer product company on the planet? It's all so silly – and to be clear, Apple is not a financial supporter of HODINKEE. They've not taken us to dinner, or paid for a single flight. I'd exchanged pleasantries with him from time to time, just as I do with most players in the watch world, but at the outset of the HODINKEE Magazine, I knew that it would be the perfect vehicle in which to delve deeper with Jony on the genesis of the Apple Watch but also his own collecting habits. I'd wondered how he felt when he read those vitriolic and downright nasty remarks from not only traditional watch lovers, but also Swiss executives. I'd wondered if he really cared about mechanical watches, or if he'd ever spoken with Steve Jobs about watches. And in Volume 2 of our incredible print magazine, I asked those questions. These are remarkably rare, no doubt, but are they too rare? What I mean is that so little is known about these watches, it's a bit daunting. I in no way am casting doubt upon them, because the Phillips team is for sure the best in the business – and one must remember that they have a team of advisors including people I trust inherently, such as Paul Boutros (as an employee) and John Goldberger and Jason Singer (as advisors) – who bless each sale. And as we all know, if Goldberger says it's good, it's good. Instead of the hyper-rare pieces in Ultimatum though, I'd instead consider the rock solid and indisputably perfect and correct watches. For example, <a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://www.phillips.com/detail/ROLEX/CH080318/19/" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the 6269 and <a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://www.phillips.com/detail/ROLEX/CH080318/25/" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LeMans presented automatic are two watches that are just insanely cool and special, and the value is not driven solely by a dial, as is the case with some other watches in this sale.
\n
I think the greatest opportunity in the Ultimatum sale is to purchase what can be described as totally correct, world-class examples of very rare, but not hyper-rare special Daytonas. What I mean here is that Aurel Bacs and Co. chose just 32 watches for this sale, and I know for a fact that they legitimately turned down hundreds of Daytonas to end up with these pieces. I know this because I know people who thought they had the world's best example of a particular Daytona, only to be told by Phillips they already had one a bit cleaner or a bit better. I've had the chance to look at these watches in the metal, and some are great, while others are spectacular. The pieces I've chosen below are nothing more than my own personal picks from the 32 lots – they reflect my own tastes, which are admittedly pretty nerdy, even when it comes to the Daytona – so take it or leave it.
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"alignment":"inline_billboard"},"type":"Block::Advertisement"},{"data":{"size":"h2","headline":"An Early Reference 6239 Double-Swiss Underline In Great Shape (Lot 23)"},"type":"Block::Headline"},{"data":{"size":"fullbleed","images":["31dd357b-18fe-440b-ba2d-b44e598cb043"]},"type":"Block::InlineImageContainer"},{"data":{"copy":"
Call me basic, but I'm nothing if not consistent (yes, I was wearing super soft sweaters in high school) and I've been extolling the virtues of early Daytonas for at least half a decade. I wrote this <a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/the-first-rolex-daytona-by-benjamin-clymer/" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this look at the first series Daytona in June 2013 when I was in hot pursuit of my own example, and my love for these early Double-Swiss 6239s hasn't died. Actually, I've been talking <a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://vimeo.com/7741966/" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">about these since 2009! These watches, which were at the time labeled \"LeMans,\" represent the true beginnings of the Daytona. And they have countless special traits that differentiate them even from the watches that were made just one year later in 1964. The hour and minute hands are long and thin, the bezel is marked to 300 with a 275 hash, and of course the dial is signed \"Swiss\" twice. This watch is an \"underline\" example of the double Swiss 6239, which puts it correctly in the 923xxx serial range. In full disclosure, I actually sold my black double-Swiss underline 6239 a while back and <a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://www.instagram.com/p/BSq_gpthRLD/?taken-by=benclymer\%22 rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now prefer the earlier examples sans-underline, but I'm a weirdo. This watch is a full-spec example in great shape, and you seldom see these early Daytonas with full lume plots.
\n
Sales for these are all over the place, from the low $70k range for weak examples to the mid $100k range for the strong examples. Of course, <a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://www.phillips.com/detail/ROLEX/CH080216/36?fromSearch=6239&searchPage=1\%22 rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phillips sold a white dial with tropical sub-registers in 2016 for CHF 310,000. Where do I think this one should go? Considering how special and important – and well researched and documented – these are, this is one worth paying for. <a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://www.phillips.com/detail/ROLEX/CH080318/23/" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">More here.
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"size":"h2","headline":"A Completely Normal But Mint 6263 'Big Red' With Full Set (Lot 22)"},"type":"Block::Headline"},{"data":{"size":"large","images":["a3663fca-0b99-46c0-84e3-6ced249c7727"]},"type":"Block::InlineImageContainer"},{"data":{"copy":"
I've owned a bunch of Daytonas in my watch collecting career, but one I've just never been drawn to is the \"Big Red.\" It's kinda the go-to 6263, and in most cases, it doesn't do that much for me because of that fact. But, when you come across a 6263 in this type of condition with a proper full set, it's hard to ignore. Further, this watch falls into exactly the description of what I think offers the best opportunity in Daytona Ultimatum – you know you're getting a world-class example of a completely recognized iteration of the Daytona. This is a later production Big Red, so with it you'll find the later MK3 pushers (of which I'm not a huge fan, but they are totally correct here), and you have a full set with Rolex warranty and sales tag with matching serial number. You even still have the sticker on the caseback, and the condition of the watch is simply par excellence. I am always critical of dealers who use the term \"New Old Stock\" too liberally, but in this case, based on what I can tell, it might actually be the case. Still, you should take a look for yourself and make your own call.
\n
What's more, the 6263 is climbing in value as fast as any watch in the world, with full-set examples now trading north of $100,000. This is downright insane considering they were selling in the 30s and 40s within the last four to five years, but such is life. I have no idea what this one will go for, but whoever buys its will have the privilege of knowing they have one of the truly best Big Reds in the world. <a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://www.phillips.com/detail/ROLEX/CH080318/22/" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">More here.
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"size":"large","images":["d31c5a70-0522-4cd8-95fc-b4be05a7e9d6"]},"type":"Block::InlineImageContainer"},{"data":{"alignment":"inline_billboard"},"type":"Block::Advertisement"},{"data":{"size":"h2","headline":"A Full-Spec Reference 6240 Daytona Just As It Should Be (Lot 11)"},"type":"Block::Headline"},{"data":{"size":"fullbleed","images":["b414b2e4-0459-4e3e-82d8-dafc532d53a9"]},"type":"Block::InlineImageContainer"},{"data":{"copy":"
The 6240 is kinda the ultimate screw-down Daytona, at least to me. They feel just like the double-Swiss underlines, because they started an entirely new category (here, the Oyster Daytona) and have so many traits that just aren't found elsewhere. Oh, and did I mention they are rare? Like, insanely rare. Especially in good shape. This example is among the purest I've seen, and it represents everything a 6240 should be. First, the case is super full and honest, the dial has all its lume plots – something you practically never see on a 6240 – you have the thin running seconds hand at nine o'clock, and the dial is a \"Small Daytona\" that, to me, is the most correct 6240 dial. The hands are correct, as is the bezel, the crown is a super early Oyster crown, and man look at those pushers! The 6240 is all about the pushers, and here you have the hyper-rare and correct brass MK0, or millerighe pushers, in great shape. Pushers like this, on their own, are probably worth $15,000 or more at this point, because nobody who would care enough to know what a 6240 is would buy one without them. Finally, this watch comes with a dated, correct bracelet with 71 end-links, exactly what you'd expect on a bracelet born for a Daytona. Because where else would a gold Daytona be sold in 1988?
\n
You can definitely mark the gold 16528 as one I wish I would've bought years ago, when they were in the $20k range, but this one has an estimate of CHF 50,000 - 100,000.
