When you hear the name George Bamford, I'm willing to bet that you immediately start thinking about customized, blacked-out Rolex watches and the controversy that comes with them. But there is so much more to the British collector, enthusiast, and designer than just that. George is one of my oldest friends in the watch world and I can't even type his name without smiling. You'll hear it in the episode, but George <i>loves </i>watches and watch people. He loves talking about watches, he loves researching watches, he loves making watches, and, most of all, he loves sharing watches with the people in his life. For him, these little mechanical marvels are a way to express yourself and to find common ground with people across the globe. One thousand stories. That's a lot of words about a lot of watches, and as of last week our editor-in-chief, Jack Forster, has hit that monumental milestone. Going back to when he joined the team, on June 1, 2015, Jack has written hundreds-of-thousands of words about thousands of watches, and he's done so from a few different continents in close to a dozen time zones. This week we're bringing back a HODINKEE Radio alum, Mr Mark Cho, the co-founder of style destination The Armoury and co-owner/proprietor of London haberdasher (and HODINKEE collaborator) Drake's. Mark joined us all the way back in <a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/hodinkee-radio-episode-43-mark-cho/" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">episode 43</a>, but after seeing him give <a href=https://www.hodinkee.com/"https://hs-ny.org/news/recap-the-ideal-watch-size-a-curious-case-of-misperception-and-missed-opportunity/" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a virtual lecture at the Horological Society of New York</a> back in April, I knew we had to get him back on the pod ASAP.</p>\n<p>You might remember from that original episode that Mark is obsessed with smaller watches and why people like watches of various sizes. So in 2018 he launched an online survey to get a sense of how people thought about the size of their wrists and what size watches they liked best. The survey ended up running for almost three years and he got almost 2,000 data points in all – and the results are fascinating. I'm not going to spoil too much – you've got to listen to the episode for the details – but it turns out that most of us are a bit obsessed and delusional when it comes to our own wrists and why we like the watches we like. And lo, a new photo appeared: Bennifer 2.0, with the watch (instantly recognizable for its “chunky chain band and a narrow face”) in plain sight as Ben alighted upon a Miami staircase.</p>\n\n<p>Had he really kept the watch for all these years? Franck Muller was a <i>huge</i> brand with a major celebrity following in the early 2000s. Its Cintrée Curvex case and dial with fancy Arabic numerals reminiscent of Art Deco watch design would have been recognizable from across a room or, in this case, a basketball court. Jon Bues reached out to Franck Muller – first by phone – just like the original Bennifer years.</p>\n\n<p>Danny Milton spent hours on Google poring over countless Muller references. Stephen and his wife, Laura, went on an <i>US Weekly</i> and Instagram gossip account deep dive.</p>\n\n<p>Nora Taylor reached out to Chrome Hearts via one of those generic information forms. Both were disheartened that they couldn't crack the case. The hands matched, as did the <i>Curvex</i> text above six. The most encouraging indicator was at the bottom of the dial. The “Swiss Made” moniker on Afleck’s pixelated watch was in the exact configuration as the Muller watch. Today we’re bringing you the Hodinkee Radio Independent Watchmaking Fantasy Draft, a celebration of today’s most creative timekeepers. If you’re looking for watches you can buy at any multi-brand retailer, look elsewhere – but if you want the deep cuts, the artisanal, and the truly special, we’ve got you covered.</p>\n<p>Cole, Danny, Jon, and I decided to work on a definition of “independent” that’s faithful to the spirit, not just the letter, of the law. The likes of Rolex, Tudor, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and others might technically be independently owned (not part of a global conglomerate like LVMH or Richemont), but their watches aren’t eligible for this draft.
